I took this photograph in the summer of 1987 while in London on business. This was long before the terrorist attacks on September 11, even though Europe was already experiencing an uptick in terrorism. At this point in history, the Bobbie securing the gate of Buckingham Palace felt comfortable taking time to have a friendly chat with a groundskeeper. I wish I could remember what they were discussing at that particular moment. There is something charming, and uniquely English, about this photo.

The quiet before the changing of the guard.

“Never Gonna Give You Up” was released by English singer Rick Astley at the time this photograph was taken.
Our world has definitely changed since 1987. Or dare I say… “Rickrolled”.
