On This Spot

Over the past 35 years, I have looked down this reflection pool hundreds of times. In my earlier years, I would run or bike here several times a week and often recovered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to contemplate life decisions or maybe what I was going to eat for dinner that evening. As time went on, it became the place I would offer family tours or take frequent trips with my daughters for that last minute extra credit project (like the morning I took this with my cellphone). No matter how many times you stand on this spot, no matter how low the clouds appear to be descending over the National Mall, you can still hear Dr. King’s powerful words giving hope to the next generation of Americans. You just have to listen.

Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.” – Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
